Die Erweiterung des Bewegten Bild/The Extensions of Space in Moving Image
by Prof. Gudrun Kemsa (Krefeld, Germany)
In the beginning were visuals of nature. Starting from their promise, to draw the viewer in, Gudrun Kemsa developed since the 1990s panorama images and visual environments. They, however, do not follow primarily the idea of immersion, but make the act of viewing accessible as a spirited being-in-the world.
The photo and video artist Gudrun Kemsa (*1961) studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Prof. Karl Bobek and Prof. David Rabinowitch. Since 2001 she has been a professor for “Moving Images and Photography” at the Hochschule Niederrhein in Krefeld. Her artistic work has been recognized with numerous scholarships and awards, including a Villa Massimo scholarship in Rome. Gudrun Kemsa’s artistic photographs and video installations are represented in numerous international exhibitions and in important collections.

Topics and Goals
Ex\\Immersio: a figure of thought that pursues a critical intellectual and artistic discourse on the popular term Immersion. The workshop conference aims at experts active in the production with so-called “immersive technologies”, and intends to complement their promise of being enveloping the recipient by audiovisual media with the striving for critical artistic, receptive and philosophical principles. Ex\\Immersio works towards finding innovative media’s identity beyond the immersive embrace.
For the third time, European experts meet who are involved in the creation of e.g. 360°- film, 3D-Audio, Augmented and Virtual Reality, and are affiliated mostly, but not only, with academic institutions. During the conference meetings, they share the projects they are currently working on, give insights into their technological equipment and facilities, and exchange the knowledge of each others’ activities in order to form an artistic and technological network of production and theory.
Since 2021, the Soundscape & Environmental Media Lab (SEM-Lab) has been
researching and developing specific concepts and methods of 3D-Audio design and Fulldome Media from an artistic-conceptual point of view and by means of critical investigation of the technical-functional settings and pre-conditions. Numerous awarded works have been produced in the VR/3D-Audio Lab. The research takes place within the framework and by support of the DKMI Research Center.
